How To Be Lonely is a song by British singer Rita Ora, released as the lead single for her upcoming fifth studio album through Shadow Records on May 1, 2020. It was written by Rita Ora herself, Lewis Capaldi and Tom Mann. The track is produced by Tom Mann and Mark "Spike" Stent.

Background and release[]

After releasing her surprise collaboration EP "Expectations" last year in order to celebrate the first anniversary of her fourth album "Poison" and touring the world for her Anywhere World Tour, Rita worked on her new album after finishing tour. The first song she wrote for the album was How To Be Lonely with Lewis Capaldi and Tom Mann.

The hype for the song began in early of April when fans noticed Rita Ora deleted all of her tweets on Twitter and she blacked out her social media accounts. On April 14 , 2020 she tweeted a video with a instrumental, we now know its the instrumental of How To Be Lonely. She continued to tease the release of the new single on April 24, 2020, a week before the release with tweeting "seven" and a GIF of her own name in golden letters. On April 26, 2020, she tweeted out a video of Rita Ora laying in a bath tub with gold fluid and with a spaceship landing somewhere. On April 28, 2020, she tweeted out a letter "to her friends" letting the fans know she hasn't been talking to them lately and announcing the title of the new single. On April 30, 2020, a day before release, she tweeted out a video of where she announced that she a new single coming out and that the song is very 'real'.

The official music video for How To Be Lonely is set to be released on May 15, 2020.

Promotion and sales[]

How To Be Lonely was heavily promoted, even more promoted then previous singles of Rita Ora. The song had support on Spotify by being added to the biggesy playlists on the platform, billboards around the world promoted the song including Spotify banners, a iTunes banner was also put up in the first week of release.

How To Be Lonely debuted on #7 on the Billboard Hot 100 (chart dated May 9, 2020) being the hot shot debut of that charting week, the single sold 90,819 digital copies in the United States alone in its first week. The song went to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 in its third week of charting making it Rita Ora's second single to reach this milestone. The song has hit #1 on various official charts worldwide including the US, UK, AUS, Canada and multiple countries in Europe.
